Atlanta’s New African Consulates Receive a Warm Welcome Reception

Written by: Cynthia L. Blandford, Editor-in-Chief

Global Atlanta hosted a warm reception for the new African Consulates in Atlanta, Georgia, and friends on Dec. 9, 2024, at the Constellations in historic Sweet Auburn, the birthplace of both MLK Jr. and the civil rights movement.

As the former Honorary Consul Republic of Liberia in Atlanta, (2009-2023), it was indeed an honor and privilege to meet these new distinguished diplomats from Ghana, Botswana, and Zambia. Atlanta can now boast of 13 African Nations including Cape Verde. It was also great to see the Honorary Consul Uganda Honorable Jack Ellis and to meet the new Consul General Republic Nigeria Amb. Auwalu Jega Namadina.

“Africa Matters” and as Atlanta continues to become the gateway for travel, trade and tourism for Africans, Atlanta is well poised to continue to strengthen diplomatic ties with African countries. Under President Biden’s U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit a few years ago, the U.S. commitment to Africa remained strong and hopefully will continue to do so under the incoming government, which still remains to be seen. Even Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has penned Sister Airport Agreements with Cote D’Ivoire, the Republic of Liberia, South Africa, Nigeria, and Namibia which speaks volume to U.S. Africa economic development and trade potential.

African Consulates include Senegal, Botswana, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Mali, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Cape Verde, Zambia, and Namibia.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Mahlet Yeshitla, Sales Representative Southeast USA for Ethiopian Airlines, a sponsor of the Global Atlanta event. Ethiopian Airlines connects Atlanta four times weekly to over 130 destinations in Africa, Middle East and Beyond.

A special thanks to Trevor Williams, Managing Editor, Global Atlanta for the invitation.
