Insights from Zunan Li

As a young and promising front-end developer, could you briefly share your career journey?

Thank you for your interest! My programming journey began in high school when I first discovered coding. I was captivated by the ability to create visual interfaces and developed a simple Snake game, which sparked my passion for coding. I later pursued a degree in Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Nottingham, graduating with a perfect GPA of 4.0. I specialized in automobile engineering, using MATLAB for 3D digital modeling and driving simulations.

I furthered my education with a master’s degree in Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Toronto, where I delved deeper into programming and system design. During this time, I explored front-end frameworks like React and Vue.js, broadening my technical skills.

Throughout my studies, I gained practical experience through internships, which taught me teamwork and how to thrive in fast-paced environments. After graduation, I joined Tencent Technology, where I worked on large-scale projects such as website performance optimization, mobile application architecture design, and front-end toolchain development.

The fast-evolving nature of front-end technology has always motivated me to keep learning, so I actively attend industry conferences and contribute to open-source communities by sharing articles and code.

In the future, I hope to continue growing as a developer and contribute to creating better user experiences.

Could you share one of the projects you are most proud of?

One of the projects I am most proud of is the web version SDK for Sogou Input Method and the AI-powered desktop pet assistant. This project was a unique challenge and my first time integrating AI with a rich text editor for real-time text correction and enhancement, while ensuring a seamless writing experience.

The desktop pet assistant featured Live2D models, providing an interactive and animated companion that could assist users throughout their computer tasks. It was exciting to explore how AI could shift from being a tool to becoming a friendly, helpful presence.

In the B2B space, I led the development of a web-based input method SDK tailored to enterprise needs. This solution enabled seamless integration, overcoming challenges like slow-release cycles and compatibility issues in traditional client-side development.

These experiences expanded my technical understanding and were crucial for my personal growth as a developer.

What do you think are the latest trends in the field of front-end technology?

Front-end technology evolves quickly, and several exciting trends are shaping the future. WebAssembly and WebRTC stand out as key technologies with vast potential. WebAssembly is enhancing the performance of web games, audio/video encoding, and complex calculations, allowing web applications to approach the performance of native apps. WebRTC, which powers real-time communication tools, is revolutionizing video conferencing, real-time collaboration, and multiplayer gaming.

The integration of AI into front-end development is another major trend. AI tools like Figma to Code are automating design-to-code conversions, improving efficiency, and ensuring consistency between design and development. AI is also helping developers by predicting errors, offering code suggestions, and optimizing performance.

Low-code platforms are also gaining traction, with AI further enhancing these tools to streamline development processes. AI is helping analyze requirements, improve user interfaces, and even generate data models, making development faster and more accessible.

For those who want to enter the field of front-end technology, do you have any advice?

My advice is to stay passionate about coding and maintain a self-driven approach to learning. It’s important to build a solid foundation in front-end basics before diving into the many available frameworks. Developing a personal knowledge system and deepening your understanding of the field will set you up for success.

Engaging with tech communities, attending conferences, and experimenting with your own projects are great ways to stay current and improve your skills. Building a portfolio with projects like a personal website or a small game not only solidifies your learning but also demonstrates your abilities to potential employers.
