Art as a Catalyst:

Exploring Nature, Innovation, and Purpose through Creativity

Interview with Ms. Liu Yang

Could you share your artistic creation philosophy?

In my artistic work, I aim to convey a core principle: any action that alters or harms nature should be reconsidered or halted. This stance might sound extreme, even impossible, but it reflects a vital truth. As we've seen, the rapid advancements in technology have often come at the expense of our environment, yet these consequences still lack adequate attention. My recent work has focused on experimenting with “local” materials that speak to the cultural and environmental pollution shaping our society. Through these materials, I strive to depict our shared environmental challenges and prompt viewers to reflect on their impact on daily life. Art, for me, is a call to pause, to consider, and to inspire others to approach life with heightened awareness and responsibility.

Regarding the environmental issues you mentioned, could you share your perspective from an artist’s point of view?

Environmental concerns are recognized worldwide, and for artists, art offers a dual purpose: a means of self-expression and a vehicle for societal change. Art not only mirrors reality but can also drive emotional resonance and inspire action. By exploring environmental crises, artists reveal the increasingly complex and fragile relationship between humanity and nature. Art has a unique capacity to foster social dialogue, raise awareness, and cultivate an understanding of environmental issues, thereby promoting participation in sustainable practices. In today’s rapidly shifting world, the voices and creativity of artists are instrumental in not just raising awareness but also motivating actions toward environmental sustainability and global preservation.

Could you share details about your work exhibited at Artexpo New York that received awards?

“Ink and Art” is a pioneering reimagining of traditional calligraphy tools, in which I replace the brush with unconventional materials such as sponges, cleaning balls, scouring pads, and wool felt. This approach explores the inherent tension and harmony between ink and creative expression, challenging and expanding the traditional boundaries of ink art. My intention with this piece is to transform the perception of ink art and introduce audiences to a fresh, experimental visual language that defies conventional limits. Through this work, I hope to inspire others to see art as a boundless realm of possibilities, unconfined by tools or formats, and to appreciate the freedom that lies in artistic experimentation.

What message do you have for those who want to explore the world of art?

Art is a vast, infinite landscape, with countless styles, genres, and artists waiting to be discovered. Stay curious, continue to explore, and never stop learning. Art is not merely a final product; it’s a journey of self-expression. Embrace your thoughts and emotions, as they are the foundation of authentic artistic creation. Remember, art is as much about the process as it is about the outcome. Enjoy every step, let art enrich your life, and don’t be afraid to make it a personal, ongoing journey of discovery and expression.
