Once again more than 2,000 guests gathered to break their fast at the Mayor’s Annual Iftar Dinner. Houston is the home of the largest Iftar dinner in the country, and I was truly honored to have been invited.

The 26th Annual Houston Iftar – Ramadan Dinner with the Mayor of Houston underscored the fact that this event celebrated unity, faith, and community. Houston is the home of more than 90 different nationalities speaking more than 100 different languages. They all came together to celebrate Iftar together.

With Mayor John Whitmire as the chief guest and distinguished attendees including Congressman Al Green , prominent business leaders, diplomats, and interfaith leaders, the evening highlighted the power of togetherness and the spirit of Ramadan.

Despite the fact that some members of the Moslem community had protested his participation, the Mayor gave a moving speech about how Houston welcomes people of different nationalities, different beliefs, and different socio-economic levels.He promised that all faiths would be protected and allowed to live their lives in peace.

Special thanks were given to Ahmad Alyasin , who gave a moving speech; Saeed Sheikh; and the organizing team for their collaboration with Sister Cities of Houston in making this event a resounding success.

Once again, the food was excellent, and the spirit of harmony left everyone thinking about next year.

As the late Congressman Sylvester Turner said more than once, “Houston is the best city in the United States to call home.”
